For those looking for a taste of small town life in the Hill Country of Texas, life in the diverse town of Kyle will suit you very well. Located on Interstate 35 between the college town of San Marcos and the city of Austin, Kyle is a perfect town for a Texas lover to live and work, though it’s an easy commute to both San Marcos and Austin. Its location makes it easily accessible to the University of Texas and Texas State University, as well. Kyle has that wonderful mix of small town charm with big city access common to the Hill Country, giving residents a chance to experience the best of both worlds.
Living in Kyle is a real treat for fans of the outdoorsy Texas lifestyle. The town prides itself on having not one, but two unique and famous trees, the enormous Auction Oak where the town was sold off to railroad magnate Jay Gould in 1880 and the mysterious Kyle Hanging Tree. As the town is located in the famous Texas Hill Country, residents have a plethora of options for outdoors entertainment, which a countryside packed full of rivers, lakes, parks, and hills for swimming, hiking and, of course, tubing. For a little extra history, you can always visit the museum dedicated to the famous Texas short story writer Katherine Ann Porter.
Kyle, like many other small towns in Central Texas, has watched its popularity grow substantially in the past few years, changing in size from just over 5,000 people in 2000 to over 17,000 in 2005. Despite the rapid growth, housing in Kyle is still quite affordable. With a low crime rate, good schools, and strong community interest in youth development and recreation, Kyle is an ideal place to raise children.
Residents of Kyle have a significant amount of community pride, and this translates into fun and interesting community activities, particularly for young people, from a summer series of movies in the park to teen nights at the Kyle Pool. Many of events display the Texas sense of humor, such as the annual Polar Bear Swim, where members of the Polar Bear Club show each other up in a swim in the pool on New Year’s Day. For recreation outside of the city, residents can take the short drive up to the enormous outlet malls around San Marcos or take in some of the urban amusements of Austin, TX. The popular water park Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels is also a short drive away.
